Israel's birthdate is an estimate, based on the birthdate of his first child, Ira. We don't know where Israel was born, though it appears he had lived in Connecticut and moved to Durham (then Freehold), Greene County (then Ulster County), New York no later than February, 1796, as that is where Ira was born.

Tilla Leona Hughes Neff, granddaughter of Ira Hughes and the original genealogist for this Hughes family, noted that she had "[searched] through [a 656 page book on Hughes, Hughs, Huse, Hues] for any clue to the ancestry of Ira, Josiah and Desire Huse, [and] found only one Huse -- Joseph, who 'went West' from his parents' house in Sanbornlon, New Hampshire. His descent was from Abel, to Thomas, Nathan, John and Joseph. At that time, 'out West' might have been Greene County, New York."

According to "Biographical History of Northeastern Ohio, 1893," Ira's father was said to be "Israel Hughes, of Connecticut... [who] was a soldier in the war of the Revolution, and died in the service". We've since learned that the author of this book must have meant the War of 1812; at least some people of that age viewed that war as simply a continuation of the Revolution.

Judy Davison, one of Israel's G4-granddaughters, has tracked down documents filed by Israel's widow, Abigail, in 1831 to request compensation for his death in what we now call the war of 1812. This request culminated in a land grant in Arkansas, though eldest son Ira and Abigail (with others??) later moved to Ohio, instead. This documentation includes the name of his children (at least, those still living in 1831). Still no news on Abigail's maiden name

In a letter from the "Treasury Department & Auditors Ofice" dated October 24, 1831, we read: "It appears from the Rolls of Captn. Thornton Company of Light Artillery from the 31st of Augst to the 30th November 1813 that Israel Hues, a private enlisted on the 15th of March 1813 for 5 years, and is remarked "Died the 30th Instant" "

A related document provides the names, order and spellings of Israel's and Abigail's children shown above, and states that Israel died at a place called "French Mills" (now Ft. Covington), NY.

Israel Hues had at least eight children - 3 sons and 5 daughters.
