Tilla Leona (Hughes) Neff, a granddaughter of Ira Hughes, was the original family historian and genealogist. The text below has been recreated verbatim from a hand-typed copy that Tilla sent to Kelly Walton Hughes. From the dates listed for Kelly's children, it must have been sent to him sometime after August l4, l953 and before March 20, l954.
There are inconsistencies in some of the dates, omissions, and some errors, but Tilla's work has been a godsend and forms the foundation for much of what is known about this Hughes family. I present it here as close to how she created the original as I can, to serve as a resource for the future. In order to preserve the flavor of this document from the time of manual typewriters and even more manual editing, I've attempted to retain even the punctuation, spacing, the use of "el" instead of "one" and "cap-oh" instead of "zero", and infrequent mispellings; strikeouts have been replaced with blank spaces. Lines denote page breaks in the original.
Tilla must have been quite a typist; she made few typing errors in a time when the Backspace key didn't delete anything and the Delete key didn't exist.
Since my own transcription skills do not meet Tilla's standards and in order to give others the chance to check where my typing might be wrong, I've decided to also offer a Adobe PDF version of Tilla's notes, including the hand-written additions of my father. In order to upload it, I needed to keep it under 5 Mbytes, so I've reduced the resolution for all but the first page, but it should still be clearly legible. If you want or need the rest of the higher resolution pages, or notice any errors in my transcription, just let me know.
Hughes, Hughs, Huse, Hues
From a book of 656 pages of genealogy of above named families,
I gleaned the following:
Hughes In Great Britain the majority of persons bearing the Name
of Hughes derive the name from Welsh ancestors. In Wales the
name occurs about as often as Smith does in the United States.
In Conway Wales cemetery about every fifth headstone bore the
name of Hughes. In England and Wales, Hughes is one of the
fifty names most common; fifty years ago it stood seventeenth.
No other spelling of the name is found in Wales.
Huse Seems to be a modification of the nme Huse or Hussey.
Abel Huse of Newbury came from North of London vicinity, from
which area came most of the immigrants to this county.
Hues A group of families using the spelling Hues lived along
the Thames above London, however, this spelling is not found
elsewhere.
Hewes John Hewes also came from around London. These families
do not seem to be of the same lineage.
Searching through this big book for any clue to the
ancestry of Ira, Josiah and Desire Huse, I found only one
Huse, --Joseph, who "went west" from his parents home in
Sanbornlon, N.H. His descent was from Abel, to Thomas, Nathan,
John and Joseph. At that time, "out West" might have been
Greene County, N.Y.
The New York State Library, Genealogical Division, names
several families with these names, but none that I could connect
with my grandfather, Ira Huse.
In the l83O Census for Greene County, Durham township,
N.Y., is the following record:
Ira Hughs, head of family, aged 34 (note the spelling)
Wife, aged 3O
4 children, under lO years
l Female, aged 7O years
This is the first and only record I found of my
grandfather. This record does not appear in the next census,
as Ira had removed to Huntsburg, O. The woman of 7O must have
been Ira's mother or mother-in-law. She did not come to Ohio,
but I could not find in the cemetery records of Durham either
a Hughes or a Serrin.
Ira had a brother Josiah, who remained in Greene County,
lived at Athens, and is buried at Medusa, N.Y. There were
also a sister Melissa (or Minerva), and Desire. This last
married a Mr. Finch. She died from shock of a near-drowing
in the Hudson River.
In the same census record is Orrin Hughes, aged between
3O & 4O, who might be the son of Josiah of Livingstonville.
These names Josiah, Orrin, appear in the family records later
leading one to believe there is a connection.
There are three didderent spellings among the
later Hughes families. Ira was particularly careless,
sometimes using the Welsh form and sometimes the phonetic
form, Huse. It may be he tried to be more accurate in
answering the census-taker for there it is
spelled nearly right, or maybe the census-taker spelled it to suit
himself. In later years the Ohio brothers decided to use the Welsh
form, Hughes. These were Israel, Hiram, and Howard. It is said
that when this idea was presented to Amos, he considered the gh super-
fluous, and decided on Hues. Hence the three spellings in one family;
The Easterners retained the name of Huse.
HUNTSBURG, OHIO
From the close of the war in l8l2, large numbers of families
migrated to the western frontiers to take up land owned by the
Government. Connecticut reserved the proceeds of the sale for the
support of her schools. This was called the Western Reserve.
General StClair was appointed Governor, and he established Trumbull
County, with the county seat at Warren.
From this county in l8O5, Geauga County was carved out and in l8lO
from Geauga County, Cuyahoga County was cut off.
At the first election, General Edward Paine received 38 of
the 42 votes cast, and became the first territorial governor.
Warren, being the county seat, grew to be quite a town
before Cleveland was ever thought of; so there must be a road across
from The Lake to Warren. The first road was known for many years
as "The Girdled Road." It ran from the sotheast part of Trumbull
County, past the Salt Springs, through northeast part of Middlefield,
southwest part of Huntsburg, central Clairdon, eastern Chardon, to
Concord on Lake Erie. The Painesville & Youngstown railroad, built
in l872, followed nearly the same route.
So Huntsburg was right in the line of progress. The Town-
ship was bought from the Government by Eben Hunt and John Brick of
Northampton, Mass., and they induced many young families to leave
eastern New York to take up land in Huntsburg. Many names found
in the Cemeteries around the Catskills are repeated in the Huntsburg
"Graveyards."
In l834, at the age of 38, Ira Huse removed from Durham, N.Y.,
traveled with his wife and six children on the new Erie Canal to
Huntsburg. He cleared the land and built a house on the center
road about 2 miles west of Huntsburg center. He occupied the home
there until his death, as did his son Israel. The house has been
remodeled, and is a fine looking country home

Children on following pages
As I look back over my memories of my mother, I believe one
of her chief characteristics was her interest in everything that was
going on in the world. Sally Ann Locy from her childhood loved books
She read everything she could get her hands on. There was the weekly
newspaper, but no public library in the farming community in which
she grew up. Some neighbors had a few books which she borrowed.
Once she brought home a book of poetry, and read it with great
delight. Her father asked he what she was so much interested in,
and she answered, "The Lady of the Lake, Father." The title sound-
ed a little like a novel, and grandpa though novels a waste of time
He took the book, read a stanza here and there, sat down & read
the whole book through without stopping. The next time he went to
town he brought his little daughter a copy of Scott's poems. bound
in red cloth, and printed with a wreath of tiny flowers around the
verses on every page. That was her first book, and it is now one of
my prized possessions.
Her schooling was a little above the average for that time.
She was a student for a while at Hiram College, a classmate of James
A. Garfield and his future wife Lucretia Rudolph; also big gawky
Bill Hazen, who later became well-known as General William B. Hazen.
Her schooling, but not her education, ended with her marriage be-
fore she was eighteen.
She was ambitious for her children, and never failed to en-
courage any tiny spark of aspiration that any one of us showed. I
recall her reading to my brothers the "Ragged Dick" series, Cooper's
Leather stocking tales, Scott's novels, and even Shakespeare.
Her chief interests were history & biography. She knew well
the kings and queens and the great of all lands & times, and when
we wished to know who was who, we asked Mother.
After her family were grown up & away she read to my father,
till he became so deaf she had to entertain him some other way.
Then she learned to play cards. My best snapshot shows them sitting
at a small table, he with a rather puzzled look, & Mother with a
smile of victory.
Her last two years were spent in a wheel-chair due to a fall.
But to the last she wore that smile of victory,--not alone over an
opponent at cards, but over all the difficulties of life.
